Discussion Canister > the late 40's early 50's.

I started reading about three weeks ago with the squirrels. If that wasn't three weeks, then whatever. Not important. I don't like to read blogs. So when I was directed here, I didn't think I'd keep reading. But I have, and I think there's two reasons here:

1) It's lyrical;
2) It's like a book, not a blog.

Now, I don't know if the whole book v. blog issue has been posted out, but if it hasn't, I am curious about some things.

Do people like reading this because it is like a book? Or because it is a blog?

And about this whole lyrical thing - I don't know if that's the right word, but its one that popped into my head when thinking about it. Because all of this thread about hanging out, and breaking the law reminds me of my time in college - no harm, no fowel. And when I think of things that remind me of memories, I think of PF, "Wish you Were Here", because the band was talking about their old frontman when they released the song, which is kind of yearning, and yet accepting, among other things, but that's how the recent posts to me have been- I guess you could say that song reminds me of the posts, and vice versa. So.

Alright, I saw the admonishion to be nice - but come on - "no harm, no fowel"? It's funny. And I didn't hurt any chickens in college either.

PF is a good band. I spent way too much time in college at the lazer light shows, if you know what I mean, too!

Wow - there's a lot going on in the start here, and I'm not sure what to say. I wasn't clear if the poster liked this - I guess one would if they'd write that much.

I like reading it because the writing's good, to answer what I think is the question. I don't care what people call it, and no, people, this is not an invitation to talk about the purpose of definitions!

I think that's why people read and post - the writing is overall good. And that's what matters.

I come here for the writing, not the definitions. Mostly, I come here for laughs. In between crusades. (That's a joke, people, in case you have no idea who PV is).

As for the lyrical comment - I think that's a keen observation. I think that with so much talk about description, "lyrical" fits well, as song lyrics do tend to have that descriptive but deceptive bent. Good idea. Not familar with PF, so not gonna comment on the song.

I'm not sure that the story is like a song. Sure, the description may be "lyrical" at times, but its not like a song. I'm here for the writing, don't get me wrong, and the sassy comments too, but not for any "lyrical" value. If it reminds him of PF, good, good times, good bad. But as for overall song type of deal - not for me. Writing is writing, and songs are songs.

What about poetry? That's lyrical, and one can like that. But prose - probably not. I think the focus should be on that the writing stimulates memories. Not that the writing reminds someone of a song that makes someone think that the song is like the post or whatever. I also got a little confused with that.

And of course we're here for the writing. Whatever the writer wants to call it is their deal. But the name isn't really our concern, I think.

Sure, poetry can be lyrical. But I think this whole "reminds me of a song" bit is personal. While good writing, in my opinion, can get personal, and allow the reader to visualize and remember their past by stimulating memories, that's a seperate issue.

Back to lyricality. I'm not sure that's how I'd describe the work either. But its a nice tribute, I suppose.

Defintiions - neh>

Note: while I don't like lyrical either, the thread starter himself admits that it might not be the right word...just thought people should remember that.

As for what its called - I agree -immaterial. But as a person who doesn't ususally read blogs, something unpolitical and less boring is always good.

Whatever happened to the good old days of discussion random crap here? The last several threads have been, well, boring and somewhat highbrow, I think. The stories are lightharted. Why are the discussions so deadly serious?

I mean, come on. We're talking about buying drinks illegally. How serious can you be????

Dude, finally. I've been quiet all this time, but for real! I have to say, buying liquor illegally is good for laughs, because whether 15-20, we've all been there. Good times!

Now that is something I can relate to, like the story. We had our tennis coach buy us beer. Good times!
April 27, 2006 | Unregistered Commenterperma-crutch
Tennis coach? We had our soccer coach do it for us. Well, the assistant. But still. We had the best parties on the weekends in the soccer house, bar none!
April 27, 2006 | Unregistered Commenterperez(mambomango)
Great. Now its time for a bunch of "beer and fart" stories from the guys:)

But I do have to admit that sometimes people here are a little too serious. After all, the stories are whimsical - why can't we follow their lead?

And one of our cheerleading mom's let us party at her house - so, I'd say WE had the best parties. :)

Aw yeah. We were all about making the fake. It's all about saying your from Montana, baby!
April 28, 2006 | Unregistered Commenterdegrezeus
One time, we thought we were using a fake, and it turned out it was just some guys college id and it had no birthday listed at all on it. Still worked!
April 28, 2006 | Unregistered Commenteropusdei13
Nah, that's nothing. One time, we actually went to the trouble of making a fake, but couldn't laminate it, so we used saran wrap, so it looked REAL bad, but - still worked.:)

Yeah, we just used my old sisters - I think that one's pretty common. But what I like about this "blog" - or whatever - again, definitions not important, is that the writer takes something we've all done - and finds a way to make it look adventerous, and silly, and this is why we like it, because its life, and life is silly escapages like this, and its great. Like the story, LA.

We used my cousins - funny thing was, it looked nothing like us! But we still got away with it. Gotta love the 24/7 marts.

Alright, I was laughing my butt off this week. Man, so true about following random stuff in college - once I ended up at a Hare Krsihna meeting, and couldnt get out. What is it with religion and 1st year college?
May 3, 2006 | Unregistered Commenter(flamefacotyr)
Ugh - there is a group, that I will NOT mention, because they receive too much publicity anyways, but they seriously harassed me and my roomate because they were on our dorm in force. Once again, the LA has a good grasp of reality...
